MIDI Week Singles: "Mute City" - F-Zero (SNES)

Today's MIDI Week Single is the culmination of the past two weeks, starting with Faceball 2000 then F-Zero X and finally with the very first F-Zero.

"Mute City" from F-Zero on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (1990).
Play It Loud! Original Soundtrack. Vol. 1
Record Label: Nintendo of America and Nintendo Power
Composer: Yumiko Kanki
Game Developer: Nintendo EAD

"Mute City" is the song that I consider to be the equivelant of the "Overworld BGM" theme from Super Mario Bros. for this game.  Whenever I think of music from the F-Zero franchise, this is the first song that is conjured up in my mind.  For me, it encapsulates the early 1990s, standing in G&G playing F-Zero (later Dr. Potts would acquire the game so I would play it at his house too) and immediately deciding that The Wild Goose was going to be the space car I would drive.  Mute City was the first track so this is probably the most frequently heard song and honestly, I think it's the catchiest from the game, although the rest of the tracks are all great, "Mute City" just has that extra chutzpah.

Just to note, in the N64 game F-Zero X, the name of the track was changed from "Mute City" to "Endless Challenge," possibly because the song titles were originally just the name of the race track they were associated with.

That's really all I wanted to do with this.

Have a nice day.

  1. I'm with you all the way. This song is just *the* song for F-Zero. And for some reason I almost think of it as Captain Falcon's theme. I'm also particularly fond of the SNES version, because of nostalgia but also because of the slightly rougher MIDI sounds - I think it delivers a stronger punch. I feel the same way about VVVVVV soundtrack songs vs the remixes (on the soulfly website)

Also - I like that you mentioned that the Wild Goose was your car right off the bat. For me it was the Fire Stingray. I'm really not sure why, but I definitely chose that one.
